Fieldwork

In my experience at Dominican, I get the opportunity to do fieldwork in various classrooms in Marin. During this time, I observe the teacher in the classroom I am placed in and participate when needed, whether working in small groups, individually, or even with the whole class. I find fieldwork very valuable because I am getting hands-on experience working with elementary students and I am able to learn so much about myself, along with observing different strategies/techniques the teacher uses that I could use in my own classroom one day. I have enjoyed my time during fieldwork and looking forward to continuing to connect with the variety of different teachers around me.

Loma Verde Elementary School

Spring 2024: For my final semester at Dominican University of California, I was placed at Loma Verde Elementary School again, but now I got the opportunity to be in the CEC (counseling enriched classroom) SPED class with Mrs. Cavallero for 20 hours. The class I was in had 7 students who were diagnosed as ED (emotionally disturbed). There are 5 5th graders and 2 fourth graders. During my time in her classroom, I got to be with one specific student the majority of the time, Student J who is a 5th grader. For my EDU 3001 course this semester, we did a case study on a specific student where we got to know the specific student and learn about their likes, dislikes, strengths, challenges, etc which I have attached below. I also got to do gardening with the students and work individually with each of the students on their comprehension/math work. I have loved watching the way Mrs.Cavallero is with each of her students. You can see that she truly cares about each one of her students and does a wonderful job of keeping her students engaged and meeting the needs of each of her students. I also got the opportunity to go to a first-grade classroom and watch an art lesson. Overall, I enjoyed being in this classroom and learning about different ways to include ALL of your students.

Case Study Final Paper

After doing this case study, I would like to remember how important it is to get to know each of your students as a whole person, not just a student. This case study taught me that when you interact with your students, it is important to ask them questions like "what is your favorite color, what is your favorite food, do you have any siblings". Questions like this allow your student to feel comfortable with you and safe. Once you establish this relationship with your students, they start to trust you and this is when you can meet each of your student's needs.

Fall 2023: I am still placed at Loma Verde Elementary School but now in Brenda Pfeifer's second/third-grade combo classroom. I have gotten the opportunity to observe and participate in Mrs. Pfifer's class for 20 hours again this semester. During my time in her classroom, I have gotten the opportunity to work with a small group of second graders during math time, while also walking around to check the 3rd grader's math work. This is my first time observing a combo class, so it has been a great transition for me. I have loved watching the way Mrs/Pfeifer engages her students and truly cares about each of her students. Being in her classroom has shown me what being a great teacher is and I have learned about many ways to engage your students, different ways to incorporate wiggle breaks, and how to make learning fun.

Spring 2023: I am still placed at Loma Verde Elementary School but now in Elizabeth Vega's second-grade classroom. I have gotten the opportunity to observe and participate in Mrs. Vega's class for 20 hours again this semester. During my time in her classroom, I have gotten to work in small groups with the kiddos, whether teaching them phonetics, reading/comprehension, spelling, or just getting to know them. It has been a great transition for me coming from a 5th-grade class to now being in second grade I have absolutely loved getting to know each of the students. Being in this class has truly shown why I wanted to become a teacher in the first place. This has been a great experience for me and has grown my love for wanting to be a teacher.

Fall 2022: I have been placed at Loma Verde Elementary School in Novato, CA. I got the opportunity to observe and participate in Karen McCormish's 5th-grade classroom while she teaches science for 20 hours this semester. During my time at Loma Verde, I got the opportunity to teach a whole science unit with the sub in the classroom, due to Ms.McCormish being out for some time. It has been a great experience for me to see what some of my strengths are and some of my weaknesses I can improve on. During my time at Loma Verde, I have learned about different ways to gain the student's attention and different ways to make sure I am reaching the needs of all of my students. This has been a great experience for me and I really enjoyed getting to know each of the students.
