Deutschlandticket: Your Key to Public Transit in Germany

The Deutschlandticket is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around Germany as a student. The good news is that your semester fee paid to the University of Bonn already includes a free Deutschlandticket valid for the duration of that semester.

The ticket gives you unlimited access to local and regional public transportation across the country, including buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and most regional trains. However, it is important to note that the Deutschlandticket does not cover long-distance trains such as ICE, IC, or EC services, which must be booked for an additional fee.

The Deutschlandticket is valid on:

Trams
Busses
U-Bahn/S-Bahn
Regional Trains (RE, RB, etc.)

But it is NOT valid on:

High speed trains (ICE, IC, EC) and most international trains
Bus routes operated by private companies (i.e. Flix Bus, Flix Train)

Where/ How to Access:

The ticket will appear in the Uni Bonn App soon after enrolling and paying the semester fee. Please allow 5-7 business days for your payment to process. The pass can also be downloaded to your Apple or Android wallet for easy access.

Bonn Public Transit System (SWB)

Tram/Stadtbahn

There are 6 Stadtbahn lines (16, 18, 63, 66, 67, 68) and 3 tram lines (61, 62, 65) running above and below ground.

Key routes include Line 66 connecting Bonn to Siegburg, and Lines 16 and 18 connecting Bonn to Cologne.

Bus

SWB Bus und Bahn operates around 50 bus lines. This includes specialized lines such as the SB60 airport express to Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) and night bus lines (N lines).

Train

A variety of regional trains run through Bonn Hauptbahnhof (Hbf), connecting the city to other hubs such as Cologne, Koblenz, and Mainz.

Bikes

Bonn is a relatively flat, bike-friendly city with bike lanes present throughout a large portion of the city. Affordable used bikes are available on Facebook Marketplace, Kleinanzeigen, or at markets like the Bike House Bonn. Rental or bike-share services also exist for short-term use.

Numerous e-scooters from various providers (i.e. Bolt, Lime, etc) are available for use in the city. These are a great option for destinations that fall within transportation deserts.

Taxis & Ride Share Apps

Taxis and ride-share services (i.e. are widely available in Bonn. Although they are more expensive, they may be convenient for special cases (initial arrival to Bonn with luggage, etc.).
