Health insurance is mandatory for all students enrolling at the University of Bonn. Before you can complete your enrollment (Immatrikulation), you must provide proof that you have valid health insurance recognized in Germany.
If you are under the age of 30 (or have not exceeded the maximum number of semesters), you will generally qualify for the discounted student rate offered by Germany's statutory health insurance providers (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung). As of 2026, this typically costs around €150 per month, though the exact amount varies slightly between providers.
Popular statutory health insurance providers include TK (Techniker Krankenkasse), AOK, Barmer, and DAK-Gesundheit. While benefits are largely standardized by law, many international students choose TK because its website, customer service, and mobile app are widely available in English.
If you already have health insurance from another country, whether it can be used in Germany depends on your individual circumstances. Students from EU/EEA countries may be able to use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), while students from certain other countries may qualify for recognition under bilateral social security agreements. If your insurance cannot be recognized, you will generally need to enroll in a German health insurance plan.
Because health insurance requirements vary based on your nationality, age, and previous insurance coverage, we recommend contacting your preferred health insurance provider well before arriving in Germany. They can help you determine which option is appropriate and provide the documentation required for university enrollment.
