General Biology

General Biology Course Information

Course Description: Students will be introduced to the scientific study of living things. Main topics include: cell theory, classification, biochemistry, plant and animal physiology, genetics, and structure of DNA. Students will be exposed to various methods of learning: lectures, discussions, cooperative learning, laboratory experiments, and group projects.

Virginia Residents: All students in the state of Virginia are required to take an end of course state assessment on the Virginia Standards of Learning. This test is organized around four major areas: scientific method, life at the molecular & cellular level, life at the system & organism level, and interactions of life forms. This test is typically administered toward the end of the semester (December & May). Passing the SOL test and the course earns students a verified credit.

Course Materials: Please bring required materials with you to class every day and be mentally prepared to participate. Each student is expected to have the following materials:

Students may complete projects throughout the semester, therefore, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, etc. may be necessary.
