In this unit, students will strengthen their drawing skills through focused practice in direct observation. Building on their existing foundational skills, students will engage in a series of drawing exercises designed to improve accuracy, control, and confidence.
The unit begins with contour line studies, including blind contour and continuous line drawings. These exercises challenge students to slow down, look closely, and train their eyes to translate details directly onto paper. Through this practice, students will refine their hand–eye coordination, sharpen their observational skills, and gain greater control over line quality.
Students will learn how to the draw eyes, nose, mouth, and measure all facial proportions accurately. Students will learn about the structure of each facial feature and how to properly shade them. Students will select a photo of a loved one who has passed or personal hero to draw. Students will apply their prior knowledge of drawing facial features and facial proportions and will use the grid method to complete their portrait.
