Digital Illustration & Design Course Overview

In this course, students will learn how to create digital works of art using online programs and platforms. Students will explore a variety of digital techniques, programs, and methods through the completion of projects, discussions, and lectures. Students will learn how to apply the principles of design to their artwork and will engage in the creative process by making original content and artwork. After this course, students will become more confident in how they use technology to create art and will understand the different styles, mediums, careers, and approaches to making digital art.

Course objectives:

Digital Art Journal

Students will be expected to organize and maintain a digital art journal with the digital artworks they make during the course of the semester. Students will begin the course by designing and personalizing their art journal cover, and will be expected to present their artwork at the end of the semester. This allows students to reflect on their creative process and artisitc journey as an artist.

Graphic Design

Students will learn graphic design fundamentals, such as color theory, font styles, composition and learn how to visually communicate ideas to an audience. Students will use Canva to create logos, layouts, publications, and school posters.  

Digital Illustration

In this unit, students learn how to create a digital illustration with multiple components. Students start off with simple doodles, line exercises, and shapes to help them develop skills using the stylus. Students get inspired by different digital illustration artists, styles and ways of creating digital illustrations. The final project for this unit is to create a digital illustration of a family recipe.

Digital Painting 

This unit students will learn how to create a digital painting using the eye dropper tool and will explore different brushes styles. Students will learn how to create value changes and smooth transitions using the a blending technique.

Animation

In this unit, students learn about the history and process of digital animation. Students will learn how to make frame-by-frame animations using Photopea and will create animated GIF.
