Drawing and Painting 1 is a Visual Arts course that introduces students to the fundamentals of drawing and painting. In this course, students will learn specific drawing techniques and practice observational drawing, building skills and knowledge through hands-on practice and targeted projects. The course emphasizes the development of the observational and perceptual skills that are essential for successful drawing and painting experiences, as well as cultivating students' creative thinking skills by allowing them to express ideas, emotions, and personalities through their artwork. Offered in the Spring only, this mixed-level course includes 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
All students will complete a 'Daily Doodle' in their sketchbook as part of a morning warm-up in class. Students in drawing and painting 1 will be expected to prep their sketchbooks and show their completed doodles each Friday for a grade. This allows students to practice drawing daily and exercise creative thinking skills.

In this unit, students learn the fundamentals of drawing from observation. Students practice drawing using contour lines and complete multiple exercises that develop their ability to see like an artist. Students began by using contour lines to accurately capture shapes, lines, and proportion, then developed their work by applying multiple media, techniques, and tools. Students create an observational drawing of succulents and create an artwork inspired by the close-up compositions and expressive flower paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe. This unit emphasizes careful observation, technical skill-building, and thoughtful artistic compositions.

In this unit, students will explore how art can help us live more mindfully by creating a space for relaxation, focus, and self-reflection. Through different projects, students will practice using art as a tool for mindfulness, learning how to be present in the moment.
Students will experiment with abstract art and playful mark-making to experience how creativity can bring calm, focus, and joy.
The unit will also encourage students to embrace experimentation, letting go of self-criticism, and exploring art more openly and intuitively. By the end of the unit, students will understand how art can support emotional well-being while also helping them grow as creative thinkers and makers.
