Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and derive meaning from a text. When your child reads about subject matters they are familiar with, asks you questions while they are reading, and uses in-text clues to find meaning from books aside from what is explicitly stated, they are building their reading comprehension skills. This year, your child will learn to retell stories, identify key details and central ideas, and make predictions.
This page (Reading Rockets) will help you find books on your child's reading level. It is important to practice comprehension skills at the "growth level," which is right before the frustration level but a bit beyond what your child is able to read independently. Avoid selecting books that create too much stress for your child as we want to maintain their positive relationship to reading as they practice their comprehension skills.
This page (Reading Universe) will provide you with specific comprehension activities to practice with your child at home. Use the filters to find the lesson that best suits your child's reading comprehension needs. Please reach out to me via email if you would like me to find specific at-home lesson plans that will help your child succeed in my classroom and beyond.
