Fluency is the ability to read at a consistent rate of speed with accuracy and expression. When your child builds their fluency, they will begin to recognize words on sight. Improving your child's automaticity will help them divide their focus evenly between reading text accurately and deriving meaning from the text. This year, your child will learn how to read new and more complex texts by improving their fluency. You can help your child at home by taking turns reading books aloud with them.
This page (Reading Rockets) contains articles on fluency that you can read to get a better understanding of what fluency is and how you can help your child develop their fluency skills at home.
This page (Reading Universe) will provide you with specific activities to practice with your child at home. Use the filters to find the lesson that best suits your child's fluency development. Please reach out to me via email if you would like me to find specific at-home lesson plans that will help your child succeed in my classroom and beyond.
