Phonology is the study of sounds. Phonemes are the smallest units of sounds that can be put together to create words. Teaching phonology helps students develop their ability to identify syllables, rhyming words, alliterative words and the onsets and rimes of words. It also increases students' phonemic awareness, or the ability to blend, segment, and manipulate phonemes, which will help students decode text. This year, your child will develop their ability to decode text which will allow them to read new words.
This page (Reading Rockets) will show you how to boost your child's reading ability at home. It will also help you learn about the best practices for teaching many aspects of reading and writing skills at the same time. Focusing one one specific aspect of reading and writing can be helpful, but it is important to put these skills into practice simultaneously.
This page (Reading Universe) will provide specific phonemic awareness activities to practice with your child at home. Use the filters to find the lesson that best suits your child's phonological development. Please reach out to me via email if you would like me to find specific at-home lesson plans that will help your child succeed in my classroom and beyond.
