Recycling is when we take things that would be generalized as trash and use them to make something knew. Recycling is a great way to conserve resources that we have on Earth by using them multiple times until they can be used no longer. Materials that can be recycled (in the city of Jonesboro) include: #1 and #2 plastic, aluminum and tin cans, corrugated cardboard, lightweight cardboard, magazines and newspapers, office paper and mailings, and shredded paper.
Recycling drastically decreases the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill. Trash that sits in the landfill emits gases that can be harmful to the environment. Recycling helps us to save space in landfills and regulate gas emmision. Recycling helps us conserve our materials by resuing them so that we do not run out of them so quickly. Also, the recycling industry provides a multitude of job opportunities.
Recycling is very good for the environment, but there are a few other ways that we can make an effort to keep our earth beautiful and to conserve our resources. One simple thing that I do is carry a metal straw around in my purse. I never noticed the amount of plastic straws that I used until I started carrying my own straw. Carpooling is another great way to be eco-friendly. If you and a friend are going to the same place, just ride together so that there are less gases burned from the fuel in the vehicle. I also like to carry around my own grocery bags made from recycled materials when I purchase groceries. I accumulate so many plastic bags from a small trip to Walmart that carrying around a few bags of my own makes that much of a difference.
