Inclusive education is a way to merge students into the 'general classroom' so that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. Inclusion entails valuing the differences of others because that is what makes us so special and unique. It also includes having respect for everyone, creating a safe enivronment, and creating individualized goals to make sure that the needs of each student is met.
I firmly believe that a good education is rooted in a healthy classroom environment. For that to occur, I will make sure my students know that everyone is accepted exactly as they are. That means that my students and I will collectively show respect and love towards one another. Part of respecting differences is celebrating them! At the beginning of each year, I plan to have my students tell me something that makes them different. This can help educate young minds that it is okay to be different. I want my students to be able to learn to embrace diversity.
The best way to promote inclusivity at home is to model it. Make sure to use words that promote diversity and accept differences. It may also be a good idea to talk to another parent or teacher about inclusivity. Exposing students to different view points, races, genders, and cultures can help us break down systematic barriers for the future generation. Having an accepting classroom environment can help students thrive when learning. All students should be able to learn, play, and collaborate together inside of a classroom where they are loved and encouraged.
