Mathematics: Building Confident Problem Solvers
Mathematics is about much more than finding the right answer. In fifth grade, students learn to think critically, solve problems, explain their reasoning, and persevere through challenges. They develop confidence by exploring mathematical ideas, making connections, and discovering that mistakes are an important part of learning.
Our goal is to help every student become a capable mathematician who approaches challenges with curiosity, persistence, and confidence.
What Will My Child Learn?
🔢 Number Sense & Place Value
Students build a strong understanding of our base-ten number system by working with whole numbers, decimals, and powers of ten. They develop number sense that serves as the foundation for all future mathematics.
Students will learn to:
Read, write, compare, and round whole numbers and decimals.
Understand place value through the thousandths place.
Use powers of ten to multiply and divide.
Perform operations fluently with whole numbers and decimals.
Estimate and determine whether answers are reasonable.
🍕 Fractions
Students deepen their understanding of fractions by representing, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions in a variety of real-world situations.
Students will learn to:
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
Multiply fractions and whole numbers.
Divide unit fractions and whole numbers.
Solve real-world problems involving fractions.
Explain their mathematical thinking using models and equations.
🧩 Mathematical Problem Solving
Problem solving is woven throughout every math lesson. Students learn that there are often multiple ways to solve a problem and that explaining their reasoning is just as important as finding the correct answer.
Students will learn to:
Solve multi-step mathematical problems.
Choose appropriate strategies for different situations.
Explain and justify their reasoning.
Look for patterns and make mathematical connections.
Persevere when problems become challenging.
📏 Measurement & Volume
Students apply mathematics to real-world situations by measuring, converting units, and solving problems involving volume. They explore how mathematics helps us understand and describe the world around us.
Students will learn to:
Convert between customary and metric units.
Solve real-world measurement problems.
Calculate the volume of rectangular prisms.
Apply measurement skills in practical situations.
Use mathematical models to solve everyday problems.
📍 Geometry & Coordinate Graphing
Students explore geometric concepts while learning how to represent and analyze information on the coordinate plane. They use mathematical reasoning to describe shapes and solve spatial problems.
Students will learn to:
Graph and interpret points on the coordinate plane.
Classify two-dimensional shapes by their attributes.
Analyze relationships between geometric figures.
Use graphs and coordinates to solve problems.
Develop spatial reasoning skills.
🧠 Mathematical Thinking
Throughout the year, students develop the habits of successful mathematicians. They learn that mathematics is about thinking, communicating, collaborating, and learning from mistakes.
Students will learn to:
Make sense of challenging problems.
Persevere when learning becomes difficult.
Explain mathematical thinking clearly.
Look for patterns and structure.
Use appropriate mathematical tools.
Check work and evaluate solutions.
Learn from mistakes and celebrate growth.
Our Goal
Mathematics helps students become confident thinkers, effective problem-solvers, and lifelong learners. Throughout the year, students discover that math is not simply about memorizing procedures—it is about understanding ideas, recognizing patterns, solving meaningful problems, and communicating their thinking.
By developing strong number sense, mastering fractions, applying measurement and geometry, and strengthening mathematical reasoning, students gain skills they will use every day. Whether managing money, interpreting data, building projects, or making informed decisions, mathematics provides tools that support success in school, future careers, and everyday life.
Our goal is to help every student develop the confidence to tackle challenges, the perseverance to keep learning, and the belief that they are capable mathematicians who can do hard things.
