Shelf examples.
Make sure you bring your personal protective equipment to class each day: CSA approved eye protection, CSA approved foot wear and COVID masks. It would also be a good idea to bring CSA approved hearing protection as most equipment used in the Mill & Cabinet shop are very loud.
Reminder that we well need to frequently wash our hands and sanitize tools/equipment when you're finished using it and returned to the tool room or another student uses it.
Home day work will need the text. This assigned work page and the MSTeams page will have adjustments done to them periodically, primarily to due dates for assignments.
Safety for Shop Equipment
Always leave the guards engaged, blades lowered or in the locked position after using machines/tools in the shop.
Class Work/Home Day Work List:
We will start this safety unit in the classroom and computer lab and then you will have to finish it up at home. We will start with our Safety unit by going to my student tutorial page; then go to the NBCSA's Safety page on my Student Tutorials page; get your code from your classroom teacher. You must complete the safety unit and have all of your CSA personal protective equipment before going in to the shop to work!

Do this work on your home day. Using your text (page 37) identify the approximate style of the kitchen at your house. Take a picture of your kitchen and take a picture of the style you think best approximates your home kitchen. Place them on a single sheet of paper and provide a brief description of why you have come to this decision. Value 10

Do this work in the class room and then finish on your Home day. Stationary Power Machine Safety Module - Each stationary power machine will be on a single sheet of paper. To be handed in as one 9 page assignment including a title page. There are 8 machines in the shop. You can choose the order. The top half of the sheet will be the drawing; it has to be labelled. But, I want the drawing to be hand drawn and hand labelled either using a pencil and paper or in MSPowerpoint's drawing tools. The bottom half of the sheet needs to have 10 Safety rules for the machine that you're doing. Machine Safety Module Requirements. Value 80.
Do this work in the class room before we go to the shop to router it out. Layout your nameplate design on your piece of hardwood. Check out this How To Use a Router - The Ultimate Beginner's Tutorial, check out the video at the 5:00 minute mark for our project.
Assemble the piece of hardwood and softwood (that you made in #4 in this work list) into a shelf with 2 supports that you make in the shop. Make sure that the hardwood nameplate is inset properly into the shelf supports and the softwood pieces are placed flush on top of the shelf. For marking: make sure the joints are tight (no light can be seen through them), layout the supports for the shelf with methods from Chapter 20 and 29 in the text). Don't forget to look at the shelf examples above near the top of this page. Stain and varnish your shelf. I have an example in the class that I will do a lesson on. Value 20

Final Project Information
Your final project is going to be a part of the drawing above. You will take the butt joint box and include one of the other joints from the sheet as 1 of the 4 corners of the 3/4" thick, 2" wide board, 3" X 3" box. Note: not all of the joints from the 10 Joints Activity Sheet will work as a good corner joint. So, choose the one that will suit the 3" X 3" box the best.
There is also sheet beside the classroom door that has more clear pictures and more details than the handout I have for you in the classroom on my podium. Make sure that you use it. The picture at the bottom of the Mill & Cabinet 120 Assigned work page is also a bit clearer so you can make better use of it as well.
