Days based on 65 minute periods, 90 day term

Description:

Hospitality & Tourism is an introductory course providing students with an awareness of career opportunities in a dynamic and growing industry sector. Students are made aware of potential social and economic benefits. Emphasis is placed on tourism in Atlantic Canada. A combination of sound business principles and vision are demonstrated throughout the course.

General Curriculum Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will meet the following outcomes:

GCO 1 - Introduction the hospitality and tourism industry

GCO 2 - Identify tourism as it related to the Atlantic region

GCO 3 - Demonstrate and understanding of marketing strategies, trends, and technology as it related to hospitality and tourism.

GCO 4 - Identify the eight sectors of the hospitality and tourism trade.

GCO 5 - Demonstrate career opportunities in hospitality and tourism

Units:


Unit 1. An Introduction to Hospitality & Tourism: The Visit - Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada.

Unit 2. The Atlantic Region & You - You , as a resident, will affect the tourism industry.

Unit 3. You Are The Tourism Connection - An awareness of the uniqueness of your own region used as a valuable tool to promote tourism.

Unit 4. Tourism Sectors - There are a number of career opportunities in the Hospitality & Tourism Industry for those with interest & attributes.

Unit 5. Travel Trends & Motivators - People travel to various destinations in a number of ways for various reasons.

Unit 6. Marketing Strategies - Success in the Tourism Industry is based upon a good marketing strategy.

Requirements of the course:

  • Come to class prepared & on time: Bring your binder for this course, pen and pencil every day, and additional materials upon request.
  • Complete daily assignments, pass work in on time, attend class regularly, participate, model respect and be present for all assessments.

Evaluation:

  • 20% class marks
  • 30% Projects, homework assignments
  • 50% Assessments
  • Term 1 mark = 40% of course mark (mark based on homework, assignments, projects, tests and participation)
  • Term 2 mark = 60% of course mark
  • Final Project/Final Exam= 40% of Term 2 Mark

Please note the following:

  • If you miss school, you must get the notes and assignments you have missed. If you are making up class time arrange a time at noon with the subject teacher. It is your responsibility to catch up on missed work. Ask another classmate or me.
  • If you miss a TEST day, you must have an acceptable excuse or a mark of zero may be given. Since all tests are done on the computers using software specific to the lab, test re-writes have to be done in the lab and at a time arranged with the subject teacher. Usually at noon or before school.
  • There will be either a Final Project, Final exam or both for this course.
  • Behavior Journal - all aspects of students behavior and performance will be documented.


STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Standards:

  1. Be on time.
  2. Tardiness - make up time, 20 minutes for the first time, time doubles after that.
  3. Only water is allowed and only at the desks, not near computer equipment.
  4. Cell phones are not permitted in this class. If a student chooses to use their phone in class, they risk consequences such as noon time, loss of other privileges and the phone sent to the office.
  5. Discipline will be similar to "real world" work place.
  6. Abuse/Misuse of school property will not be tolerated.
  7. Remain seated.
  8. Raise your hand if you need help and be patient.
  9. Be quiet and remain quiet.
  10. Maintain your Workstation, keep it neat, push in chairs, put things away, etc. (Marks on each report)
  11. Be respectful.


Expectations:

  1. Students are expected to stay on task and complete all mandatory exercises, in an efficient manner.
  2. Students are expected to come to class prepared with all materials for that class.
  3. Students will not be allowed to be excused during class time unless an emergency arises and then students must ask permission. No one is allowed to leave without permission unless they like to make up time. (10 minutes)
  4. Students who require help during class time must raise their hands. All other times they are to remain seated and stay quiet.
