Art 8 Grading

How Your Art Class is Graded

For 8th grade art classes , your grade will be calculated using the standard Connections Academy grading scale (see Student Handbook for full scale):

A (90-100%), B (80-89.9%), C (70-79.9%), D (60-69.9%), F (0-59.9%).

You need a 60% or above to pass this class!

Your grades will be recorded in your grade book and updated weekly.  I usually work on grading on Tuesdays & Thursdays each week. You will be able to access your gradebook anytime in order to see your current grade. Make sure to check our grade weekly so that you know where you are successful and where you are struggling. If you have questions or comments about your grade, please feel free to Webmail me!

Your art grade will be made up of the following:

(Approx. 60% of Grade Overall)

Art is best learned through hands-on experiences. Three Portfolio Items throughout the semester account for 50%-60% of your overall grade. You CANNOT pass the class without completing portfolios. Instructions will be provided for each portfolio through the online course book, as well as extra helps and instructions through our Class Website. Most portfolios include the submission of your artwork. This year, each portfolio will have up to THREE options. You only need to complete one option to get credit. I will grade Portfolio submissions within 5 school days (each Monday). All portfolios will be graded using the same rubric, which is posted here: Art Portfolio Grading Rubric. If you ever have questions about how to do a portfolio, please message me right away! Do not let a portfolio overwhelm you or you will get behind in the class. I will do all that I can to help you complete each portfolio successfully.

Many portfolios have options for Extra Credit. This will help boost your grade if you need it!

Grade Recovery: I allow you to redo any portfolios you get 85% or below (17/20 or lower). If you would like to redo a portfolio, please follow the feedback instructions and then webmail me your new artwork and/or worksheet. I will then review your new webmail submission and update your grade. Portfolio resubmissions will be graded within 2 school days of sending the webmail.

(Approx. 35% of Grade Overall)

"End-of-Unit" Quizzes are given at the end of each unit to assess what you have learned. Quizzes account for 30%-35% of your overall grade. They will cover all of the material throughout the unit and will be multiple choice. Unless otherwise stated, quizzes are closed book, but you can use your Art Sketchbook with any notes you have taken or the Study Guides (see below). All end-of- unit quizzes are graded automatically. If you have questions about a quiz grade, feel free to send me a Webmail message.

It is highly encouraged to use Notes, Lessons & Study Guides to help you complete your quick checks and quizzes successfully!

Grade Recovery: I allow you to redo any quizzes you got 80% or below on. To redo a quiz you did poorly on, you will have to send me a webmail with your quiz corrections. You must follow all instructions in the Grade Recovery page on how to complete quiz corrections: Grade Recovery in order to bring your score to 100%.

Make sure you look over the Study Guides (see links below) to help you choose the correct answers in order to bring your score to 100%.

(Approx. 5% of Grade Overall)

Quick Checks will accompany most lessons and will assess what you learned during the lesson. All quick checks combined account for only 5% of your overall grade. They will be multiple-choice and graded automatically. If you have questions about a quick check quiz grade, feel free to send me a Webmail message.

It is highly encouraged to use Notes, Lessons & Study Guides to help you complete your quick checks and quizzes successfully!

Grade Recovery: You can complete grade recovery for Quick Checks you scored 80% or below on by completing quick check corrections using the Template and instructions here: Quiz Corrections OR waiting till all lessons are completed in your gradebook at the END of the semester and sending me a webmail asking for a reset. Make sure you let me know the Lesson Unit number and Lesson number and title of the lesson so I reset the right one.

(All DISCUSSIONS HAVE BEEN DROPPED from the course)

A discussion is an opportunity for you to communicate with your classmates regarding the content that you are studying in class. There will be 0-2 discussions per semester. In a discussion, each student is required to make an original post that answers the discussion question, as well as respond to at least 2 of your classmates’ posts in order to receive full credit. An original post should be between 50 and 100 words, and a response should be between 25 and 50 words. A response needs to be more than “I agree” for credit; it must help to advance the discussion. I will grade discussion submissions within 2 school days. Be sure to read all instructions in the discussion (follow the instructions posted on the Class Website). If the instructions are not followed, you will receive a low score. If you need help posting to a discussion, use this link: How to Post to a Discussion.

Grade Recovery: I allow you to redo any discussion grade for a higher score. In order to fix a discussion grade, you will have to update your discussion following the feedback I have given you, then webmail me that you have done so, and I will update your grade.

Discussions will NOT be a part of your grade in this course. Do not worry about Discussions.

Participation is NOT a part of your grade in this course. Do not worry about Participation.
