At Red Dot, Blue Dot Preschool, we are safe! Our cooking classes are the perfect time to teach preschoolers about health and kitchen safety.
Clean Hands, Healthy Kids: Before any ingredients are touched, we practice proper handwashing techniques. It’s our first step in every recipe!
Kitchen Awareness: Children learn about "hot" and "cold" areas of the kitchen, understanding boundaries and how to stay safe around appliances.
Tool Safety: We use age-appropriate tools to practice spreading, stirring, and pouring, helping develop fine motor skills under close supervision.
Following Directions: Cooking is a wonderful way to practice listening and following step-by-step instructions in a specific order.
Having a kitchen at Red Dot, Blue Dot Preschool allows us to take learning to a whole new level! Whether we are making rice crispy treats, muffins, or nachos our cooking classes are a highlight for every student.
Mathematical Measuring
Cooking is "math in motion." As we follow recipes, we dive into:
Fractions & Parts: We cut ingredients into halves and fourths, practicing the vocabulary of whole, half, and fourth.
Measurement: Children get hands-on experience with volume, weight, length, and height.
Quantity: We count parts and pieces, reinforcing one-to-one correspondence.
Scientific Observation
The kitchen is our second science lab! We use our senses to observe:
Changing States: Watching how temperature (hot vs. cold) changes ingredients from hard to soft or liquid to solid.
Comparison: Noticing differences in texture, color, and size.
Sensory Details: Engaging smell, touch, and taste to gather information about our world.
These classes do more than just fill tummies; they build confidence, language skills, and a practical understanding of how math and science work in our everyday lives.
