September: Welcome Back!
For the month of September we will be reviewing about Art room procedures and discussing more characteristics of color in Art!
We will also get to make a personalized piece for a school-wide collaborative display! Stay tuned for photos!
Aboriginal Dot Leaves
3rd Grade students explored the traditional artwork of the Aboriginal people of Australia. These native people had no written language, so they used symbols to record and share their stories. Aboriginal people are very protective of their sacred symbols so they used to erase their artwork after ceremonies and events. As time passed and they decided to keep their artwork permanently, they developed the dotted style as a camouflage for their symbols.
Students discussed how it would not be respectful for us to copy their symbols, so instead we emulated their dotted style with a subject we know well this time of year: leaves!
Radial Prints
3rd Grade artists explored the art of printmaking by creating custom plates and printing them on a tie dye background. They learned that when creating a relief print, only the raised areas of the design leave ink on the paper. The students chose to either carve a design into a piece of Styrofoam or attach pieces of foam to a cardboard base to create a design. Whichever method they chose, their design had to be symmetrical, or the same on both sides of a center line.
When printing, the students rotated their plate around the center of the paper to create radial symmetry, or equal slices of design around the center point.
This was a very tedious and labor-intensive project, making sure that the background paper and the plate were centered and symmetrical, but the results were worth it!
