check your understanding

I am rebranding what we have previously called homework, into Check YOUR Understanding. If you would like to read more about my reasoning, check the bottom of the page.

DETAILS:

All students will be given an opportunity to do Check YOUR Understanding questions.

Check YOUR Understanding content will focus on standards and/or skill practice

I will not assign a grade to Check YOUR Understanding questions.

I will provide answers & worked examples, answer student questions and allow students to talk about the problems collaboratively.

MY REASONING

To move forward in Building a Thinking Classroom, I am following the research on homework done by Peter Liljedahl. His research found the main reasons students completed homework was for a grade and to please teachers and/or parents. Notice, that these reasons why and for whom, do not impact a student's learning.

Students who actively work to check their own understanding will most often be successful in mastering the math standards.

As always, my goal is for students to achieve mastery and Check Your Understanding problems are just one way I provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
