Action Plan:
I fundamentally believe students need more ownership of the learning experience. I plan on utilizing student input for all parts of my classroom environment. This includes interactions where negative behavior is being exhibited by students. After my initial identification of a negative situation, I will have the student decide the course of action in response to the negative behavior. The student will self-reflect and figure out appropriate ways to do better going forward. The student will plan of action for future success.
Rationale and Reflection:
The goal is to have students self-reflect more and take ownership of discipline. In most situations teachers immediately correct or discipline in response to negative behaviors. I will instead ask questions to the students regarding the behavior then have a student-led discussion about what would be good alternatives that are more acceptable. In reference to students choices, "When the teacher moves to student choice instead of discipline, the behavior is disrupted, and the student has an opportunity to apply thinking and problem solving."(Marshall, 2005). This will require me as a teacher and mentor to be authentic when asking for acceptable alternatives. I need to consider tone and delivery when interacting. I must always consider cultural differences in response to teacher student conversations.
