Action Plan:
Instead of having rows and desks neatly aligned, I am going to put students into pairs or small groups. The desks will be grouped together. These groups will be shifted and changed as I get more information about the students. I will intentionally group students to have them work with a diverse set of partners. I will also include the students in the decision-making process when selecting the groups. The grouping will be very intentional. I want students to learn to work together and to value community group work.
Rationale and Reflection:
"The physical environment can reinforce the importance of being kind and tolerant by having students in units rather than isolated as individuals", (Weinstein,2003). Many times, students in traditional room layouts will segregate themselves. Often one area of the room will have students who participate in discussions more often than another area or group of students. I will always be cognizant of these issues. According to Pinto (2013), "Research about classroom layout usually confirms that clustered groups of student seating rather that more traditional rows are better for learning and interaction." I will make sure to include the students in the layout process. Having students involved creates a democratic environment in the classroom. Eventually the students will take more ownership of the learning experience.
