Personal Statement
My why?
I grew up with a mother who valued reading. Even though we didn't have many economic resources she made sure to read to us at a young age. This eventually set me up for school with a strong foundation for learning. I realize now how big of an impact this had on my life. When utilized correctly, education is the most powerful tool we have as a society. With education we can hope to eliminate bias, bigotry, sexism, racism, poverty, hate, the wealth gap and many other concepts that stem from being uneducated. Every decision a person makes is based upon their frame of reference and prior knowledge. If a person is educated, they have the potential to be a positive force for good, an asset to society, and a successful human. Being educated does not solve all the problems of the world, but it does produce overwhelmingly well-informed and thoughtful people. I believe if children are educated properly then they have the potential to become a positive force in their community. As a result, I am going to dedicate my life to educating students, who inevitably are the future citizens, neighbors, community members, and leaders of our society.
