Ask friends or relatives if they have one kicking around. You would be surprised how many people have instruments that are not currently being used.
Check with your child's band/orchestra director at school to see if instruments are available to borrow over the summer.
Many people will rent an instrument at a local music store such as Bearclaw Academy in New Milford. There are many good music stores in the area that you can check into. Some good stores a little further south are Phil's Guitar Shop in Brookfield, Music Learning Center in Danbury and Bethel Music in Bethel. Call and shop around to see what plan works best for you. For string instruments, there is an very good company called Stamell Strings www.stamellstring.com
For beginners, I recommend renting or borrowing a good quality instrument rather than purchasing online (except for snare drum see note below).
If your child is studying the snare drum you only need to purchase a practice pad and drum sticks that cost less than $50. I recommend getting a Remo 8 inch tunable drum pad and Vic Firth 5B or 5A drumsticks. Nylon tips are optional.
Another option for New Milford families is to request funding from MVP-SOS. Try their website at http://www.mvpsos.com/ for more information. MVP-SOS is an excellent organization and they have helped many New Milford families.
PLEASE READ THIS ADVICE ABOUT ONLINE PURCHASES: A word of advice regarding online purchases. Most instruments that are very inexpensive that are available on the internet are very poorly made and result in frustration for the student because the instrument does not work properly and has a tendency to break. This defeats the purpose of taking lessons in the first place. It is almost always better to rent or borrow a good quality instrument (it does not have to be brand new) than to purchase a poorly made new one. After your child has played for a few months to a year, and you are pretty sure he/she will stick with it, you can investigate other options, such as purchasing a good used or new instrument or getting into a rent to own program.
