Organization is key to planning any lesson plan, unit, or week. I suggest buying an agenda or planner where you can write out and plan all of your instructional activities. Students, also, need structure and enjoy when classrooms have routines. Planning out daily activities allows me to be specific with my plans and also include notes for organizing and preparing my lessons daily. Anytime you can plan out and have plans done ahead of time, the instruction and lesson will go much smoother and according to plan. Additionally, write down anything else going on in your life. I always wrote down weekly assignments due for my seminar classes and Wednesday Assignments due for EDUC 465.
One of the most important aspects, if not THE most important aspect, of teaching is getting to know your students and building relationships. Once appropriate relationships are established with students, it will make planning and preparation much easier. You will know which students will need more time on assignments, what students need to be challenged, what students need accommodations, and so much more. All of my lesson plans include a section titled, "Adaptations/differentiated instruction." Having relationships with students and knowledge of them and their needs allows me to plan more efficiently and meet each and every one of them.
Assessment, when done properly, is extremely useful and allows educators to gain insight and data on students. If assessments are given and data is not being used to drive decisions then the assessment is worthless. I always design my assessments first and then work backwards. This concept is called backward mapping. After designing and creating assessments, I ensure my instruction and daily activities are building up to meet and cover all aspects of the final assessment. If I want my students to include accurate historical graphics and content in the assessment, I need to make sure I am giving students this material in class during instructional time. Also, if I am asking students to answer questions from a rubric to include in a presentation, I will need to make sure that I covered that specific material in some detail during the course of class time. After the assessment is taken or created, I will analyze it and collect the necessary data points so that I can craft and mold future assignments. IOnce again, if you are giving an assessment, make sure you are collecting data and making decisions based on the data.
