Parts of an Aircraft Visual Dictionary
Parachutes: Construct model parachutes and identify design changes to improve effectiveness of the design.
Hot air balloons: Describe the design of a hot air balloon and the principles by which rising and falling are controlled.
Remember:
- Air molecules that are MORE DENSE are closer together.
- Air molecules that are LESS DENSE are further apart.
- Cold air if more dense than hot air.
Gliders: Construct a glider and test the effectiveness of different designs.
Remember:
- The most effective designs we made in class had equal weight distributions on each side.
Parts of a Plane: Apply proper vocabulary in referring to control surfaces and major components of an aircraft.
Remember:
- You can use your model aircraft to show what direction a component must move in order to change the pitch, roll, and yaw of an aircraft.
- Review your visual dictionary.
Propellers: Construct and test propellers and other devices for propelling an aircraft.
Rules for a great propeller:
- Short wings
- Counterweights (such as paperclips) at the base of the propeller (NOT THE WINGS).
- Extra wings on the propeller, if possible.
Aircrafts vs. Spacecrafts: Identify differences in design between aircrafts and spacecrafts.
Remember:
- Spacecrafts need more fuel to give them the propulsion needed to move through earths atmosphere.
- Spacecrafts use rockets which hold many tons of fuel in order to propel them past earths atmosphere.
