Eriane Austria, Technical Producer
Morphology is inspired by the recursive geometric patterns that are shared by science and architecture alike. This concept visually manifests as abstracted architectural images through the production of dynamic fractal patterns.
This website documents our process developing Morphology, a video installation designed for our client Gensler for their Media Wall located in their Austin, TX lobby. Morphology was completed in the 15 week Fall 2023 semester in Yuliya Lanina's DXD Studio course at The University of Texas at Austin. We regularly communicated with the Gensler DXD Team on project progress and direction.
Em Dryer is the Creative Producer who led content creation, implementation of feedback, and formatting the work.
Eriane Austria is the Technical Producer who led coordination, presentations, and documentation of the work.
We'd like to express our thanks to the Gensler DXD team, Justin, Adam, and Gerardo; Yuliya Lanina, our instructor; and our fellow DXD classmates for their support and feedback during the development of our work.
Featured directly below is Morphology in its final form and presentation at Gensler's Austin, TX office starting November 30, 2023, as well as a Reflection on this experience.
We hope that you enjoy our work and learning about our journey. If you are interested in us and our work, feel free to contact us!
Presented on November 30, 2023 at the Gensler Austin, TX lobby
We decided to tailor our project concept to the context that this work was made in, and we’ve done so through visual storytelling. We focused on the innate connections between structures and people and did so through the use of meaningful content.
In finalizing the content, we considered…
Gensler’s brand
Site-specificity being here in (Austin, TX)
Portraying a direct link to UT Austin
The bidirectional relationship between structures and people, and
Our own experiences as students with science and arts backgrounds.
Therefore, we decided to center the project on The Moody Center, a collaboration between Gensler, UT Austin, and others to immerse, engage, and connect people through its architectural design.
As images of The Moody Center, courtesy of Gensler, kaleidoscopically morph, viewers recognize patterns and places based on their own subjective perception, thereby creating a unique space that is personal to their own schemas and specific to our project concept.
Morphology started from multiple scientific forms morphing into one another, pivoted to general architectural imagery abstracted into fractals, and developed into a strong, storytelling piece reflective of Gensler, UT Austin, and us as a team.
The most valuable takeaway from creating Morphology for Gensler’s Media Wall was the importance of frequent testing and feedback. We gained a lot of insights because of this constant, iterative process, which improved our work visually and narratively and ensured that our files were able to run as intended.
We were thrilled to hear from our audience at the Final Review that we achieved a nice balance between abstraction and literal representation by combining fractals and placemaking, as we had been chasing this balance throughout the whole process. Our audience was delighted to recognize features of The Moody Center in viewing the piece on the Media Wall. We fielded questions about our process including how colors and the kaleidoscopic effects were produced. We were very thankful hearing their positive responses regarding the strength and cohesiveness of our project concept, storytelling, visuals, and presentation. The Gensler DXD team complimented the presentation of our work, ability to listen to and implement feedback, and the final work itself.
We are grateful to have had the opportunity to create this work alongside Gensler and the DXD Studio class and to be the first class to present and witness their work in-person at the Gensler Austin, TX office. It is our hope that Morphology mesmerizes and inspires viewers through its visuals and story.
