"Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and strength, use it to create."
~ Maria Montessori
Cross-curricular learning projects this semester will begin with an in-depth exploration of simple machines—examining their history, applications in both ancient and modern societies, the mathematical principles behind them, and the engineering concepts they embody. Students will be allowed to dive deep into this learning, moving at a pace that satisfies their curiosity and interests.
Cross-Curricular Integrations:
Geography & Ecology Studies - Geographic studies will provide context for how different cultures and environments influenced the development and use of simple machines, while ecological connections will explore the impact of human innovation on natural systems and sustainable practices.
Math concepts will be embedded in the context of the machine/project. Montessori materials will be utilized to support discovery and practice in measurement, geometry, data collection, and problem solving.
Language studies will be woven throughout the unit, including vocabulary/spelling development, technical writing, and research-based presentations. Journaling includes math reflections, calculations, diagrams, and data recording as students build their engineering project notebooks.
Project: The unit will culminate in a collaborative Rube Goldberg design project, integrating all areas of study.
