The learning intention is expressed in terms of knowledge, understanding and skills, and links directly with the relevant curriculum documents and should be taken from:
Content descriptors in the Victorian Curriculum 7-10
Key knowledge and key skills within the VCAA Study Design for VCE 11-12
Elements within the Learning outcomes of the VCAL course book
The learning intent is clearly explained to students at the beginning of the lesson and referred to multiple times throughout the lesson to engage students with what they are learning and why they are learning it. The learning intent should also be visually displayed for students to refer back to during the lesson.
Success criteria should refer to a concrete learning performance: something students will say, do, make or write to indicate they are moving toward the learning goal. They help teachers and students to decide whether the students have/have not achieved the learning intention. The success criteria should be visually displayed for students to refer back to during the lesson.
Success criteria often use verbs like explain, describe, model, show, write, justify, or create
Success criteria need to:
Be written in language that students are likely to understand
Be limited in number so students are not overwhelmed by the scope of the task
Be supported, where necessary, by exemplars or work samples which make their meaning clear
Created, ideally, with input from students so that they have greater understanding and ownership
Be differentiated- broken down into what the students need to Know, Understand and Do
Resource on how to write effective learning intent and success criteria
Used to engage the students and occurs through explicit instruction or targeted questioning to reintroduce key vocabulary, knowledge or skills previously taught, to support students to achieve the learning goals of the lesson.
