“In teaching students for understanding, we must grasp the key idea that we are coaches of their ability to play the ‘game’ of performing with understanding, not tellers of our understanding to them on the sidelines.” –Understanding by Design, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe
In implementing the backward design approach, I consider the learning goals of the unit first. These learning goals contains the knowledge and skills I want my students to learn when they complete a unit of study.
Prior to deciding how to teach the content, once the learning goals have been established, the next step is designing authentic assessments. Careful analysis of these assessments informs my decisions for differentiation and followup lessons.
