There is no school-year beginning like the beginning of Kindergarten and this year more so than ever. For many children, the first day of kindergarten may be their first day of school ever. Social and emotional development is an important focus in our classroom. The daunting task this year was adapting lessons plans and curriculum for our virtual classroom, while also building community with children from two different schools that I had not met in person.
A child’s education is a partnership between home and school. It is vital for parents to be a part of the virtual learning experience. Working together with families, we can bring to life all the wonder and joy that is experiential learning in kindergarten.
In order to foster meaningful relationships and authentic connections in our virtual classroom, it is essential to get to know my students while teaching remotely.

There are many ways to try to help young students get to know one another during distance learning.
We start each day with Morning Meeting: “How are you feeling today? ” We use emojis to show how we are feeling at the moment.
We continue to get to know each other by sharing our stories: “What’s new at home ? (A loose tooth, grandparent visits, a new sibling, a new pet, etc.)
Chat and Chew: A Virtual Snack Time
These informal social gatherings allow the students to see and talk to their friends while they are eating, just like they would at school.
