A portfolio page that records what I've added to the game
A development journal. While it's a "journal", I sort of started late, since I have only began writing this after building a basic grapple hook mechanic. I usually write these kind of journals for myself to go back into (to learn again after I forget), and for some friends whenever they wonder "why is Arthur going MIA again?
The process of making this game is meant to be stress-less, but not painless since I still want to set some deadlines for myself.
Version 0.0 8/24:
Based on how I'm envisioning for this game, it involves 3D (low-mid poly), hack and slash, parkour, grappling hook, colossal bosses (hopefully), and speed. Like lots and lots of speed. The character gains attack points from movement speed, and breaking different parts of the boss will bring bonuses that either let you grapple, which can be used to increase the player's velocity, or powerups that straight up buffs your attacks.
So yeah, kind of like Attack on Titans if I get the boss fight done right.
Just look at this beauty (I did not create these, but I sure do hope that I could one day)
Interesting storylines mixed with engaging combats always have been what I look for in most of the games I play, and graphics is just another thing that fascinates me. BUT if I'm about to develop a game myself, those mechanics do not seem doable given that school have started and I want to develop Breakfast Bay for senior design. Stuck between the urge to create something and other responsibilities, I was troubled.
Rough time like this really had me asking myself a question that, for some reason, I've never had when developing a game: what actually makes me have fun in a game? By that I don't mean what I've mentioned previously, but just some thing simple: a mechanic that I enjoy to play with. On a bus-ride for my 9AM I got a revelation when I came across a GDC panel by the creator of A Short Hike, while his other demonstrations were great, the most that I've got out of it was an idea that maybe I could just try to make a game by expanding on a simple mechanic that I'm always excited to play with.
And the first thing that came to me was grappling hooks (yeah I want to do cooking to but I haven't had any good ideas yet). Especially the grapple mechanics in Doom Eternal. Like you can't say no to flying 200 mph around the map on a grappling chain that is tied to a shotgun...
