Aaron needs your help to organize the rocks you collected in the volcano. Help him make a bar graph of intrusive and extrusive rocks.
Extrusive rocks form quickly outside the Earth. They will all look like they're made from the same material; it's hard to see different minerals in an extrusive rock.
Intrusive rocks form as hot stuff (either magma or water with dissolved minerals in it) cools slowly inside the Earth and deposits crystals as it does. You'll be able to see the different types of minerals that make up the rock.
Collect all the rock samples from the volcano
granite
diorite
pegmatite
andesite
kimberlite
rhyolite
obsidian
basalt
pāhoehoe
pumice
tuff
copper porphyry
Sort them into extrusive (looks like all the same thing) and intrusive (looks like it's made of different things) on the appropriate green squares near Aaron.
When you've finished, look at your graph. What do your results tell you about the rocks that make up the volcano?
Look closely at the rocks you collected. Intrusive rocks will very clearly be made of different kinds of minerals.
Sometimes the Minecraft rocks will be obviously made of different things, but sometimes textures used for Minecraft rocks can make it look like there's more variety in the rock than there is in real life.
To be sure of your observations, talk to the scientists around the volcano and look at the real-life examples of the rocks from the ROM's collections.
Think about where you collected each rock.
The intrusive rocks will be down inside the volcano. The extrusive rocks will be on the surface.
