Title: Listen to The Voices of The Past

Melanie Thompson and Boris Thompson-Roylance are visual artists from the UK.

Together with butoh performer Masamichi Shibasaki from Fukushima, they will develop a collaborative series of interventions and performances during a three-day residency prior to the festival, working with sound, film and found objects.

This cross-cultural exchange project explores the space between their respective cultures, traditions and histories. In September 2025, Masamichi Shibasaki visited England, where he collaborated with Boris Thompson-Roylance to create a film exploring folklore, stillness, silence and movement. Filmed at sacred British standing stone sites, including Avebury and Stanton Drew, the work reflected on landscape, ritual and memory.

A year later, Boris brings the completed film to Tokyo and is joined by Melanie Thompson, a site-specific performance artist whose practice resonates with Shibasaki's butoh while remaining distinctly her own. Together, the three artists explore both the shared ground and the points of divergence in their practices, considering art as a means of illuminating the past while questioning contemporary life.

On 7 September, from 13:00 to 18:00, the artists will maintain an evolving presence within the gallery. Working individually, in pairs and together, they will create a series of unfolding interventions that invite festival visitors to enter, observe and participate in an immersive, continually changing environment.
