日本におけるパフォーマンスアートの源流
「MMAC2.0 FESTIVAL IN TOKYO 2026」は、M.M.A.C.（Mixed Media Art Communication、以下MMAC）と、その国際的連携組織P.A.N.（Performance / Performing Art Network）の活動を振り返り、そこで培われた表現と交流を次世代へつなぐフェスティバルです。
MMACにつながる活動の源流は、1984年に福島県会津地方の檜枝岐村で開催された「檜枝岐パフォーマンスフェスティバル」に遡ります。及川廣信氏を中心に立ち上げられたこのアートプロジェクトは、その後のMMACへとつながる活動の出発点となりました。2026年、その開催から42年を迎えます。
檜枝岐から会津田島、喜多方、三島町アートカレッジへと連なる活動の中で、MMACは国内外のアーティストを結び、実験的かつ批評的なパフォーマンス表現の場を継続的に生み出してきました。その中心的な役割を担ったのが、福島大学で教授を務めた故・星野共氏です。
こうした活動を体系的に記録し、評価・検証する機会は、これまで限られてきました。本企画では、その歴史と功績をあらためて見つめ直し、日本と海外の観客に紹介します。緩やかなつながりの中で培われた経験と記憶は、参加アーティストの中に水脈のように流れ続け、時を経て各地へと広がっています。
「MMAC2.0 FESTIVAL IN TOKYO 2026」は、それらの流れが再び交差する場です。歴史を振り返るとともに、そこから生まれた多様な表現とネットワークを現在へつなぎます。新生MMACの再始動の場であるとともに、これからの表現と交流の可能性を探る場となることを目指します。

The Origins of Performance Art in Japan
MMAC2.0 FESTIVAL IN TOKYO 2026 revisits the activities of M.M.A.C. (Mixed Media Art Communication, hereafter MMAC) and its international partner network, P.A.N. (Performance / Performing Art Network). The festival seeks to carry the artistic practices and exchanges developed through these activities forward to the next generation.
The roots of these activities can be traced to the Hinoemata Performance Festival, held in Hinoemata Village in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture in 1984. Initiated around Hironobu Oikawa, this art project became a starting point for the activities that would later lead to MMAC. The year 2026 marks forty-two years since that first festival.
Through a succession of activities spanning Hinoemata, Aizu-Tajima, Kitakata and Mishima-machi Art College, MMAC has connected artists from Japan and abroad, continually creating opportunities for experimental and critical performance practice. A central figure in this work was the late Tomo Hoshino, who served as a professor at Fukushima University.
Opportunities to systematically document, assess and critically examine these activities have remained limited. This festival revisits their history and achievements, presenting them to audiences in Japan and internationally. The experiences and memories cultivated through this informal network continue to flow through the practices of participating artists like an underground current, branching out over time to reach new places.
MMAC2.0 FESTIVAL IN TOKYO 2026 brings these currents together once more. By revisiting this history, the festival reconnects the diverse artistic practices and networks it generated with the present. It marks a new beginning for MMAC and offers a space to explore future possibilities for artistic expression and exchange.
