Introduction: This project helps English Learner students improve the quality of their writing.
Problem: Many English Leaner students were struggling to produce clear and coherent writing, and to make appropriate revisions and edits. District writing scores at my school site were lower than they should be. A successful writing project was created, but needed modifications to support the learning needs of English Learners.
My role: In collaboration with other subject matter experts, I modified a project titled Prolific Writing, originally created by Clare LePelle, to meet the needs of English Learners
Research: I participated in workshops with multiple SME's, analyzed the effectiveness of the original version of Prolific Writing, learning about multiple, proven methods to help close skill gaps for students. Being an SME myself, I also gathered relevant data from my experiences teaching writing for many years to English Learners.
Process: Using the backwards planning process, I created a summative assessment with corresponding learning objectives. This process was recorded on SFUSD's Unit Planning Template. After receiving feedback from multiple stakeholders, I moved forward with creating individual lessons to help students learn the skills necessary to achieve success with the summative assessment.
This unit was designed for in-person learning, or synchronous learning.
This formative assessment is used to assess student revision skills before the summative assessment. After participating in this unit cycle with students and eliciting feedback from other teachers that used the unit, many found this assessment to be a necessary addition to the project. This provides teachers with a clear picture of what aspects of revision and editing their students may still need support with.
This demonstrates the sequence of lessons for Prolific Writing, that will repeat throughout the semester. I created this lesson cycle using Google Slides. This was the best way for students to access the material, and is easily synched in Google Classroom and shared on Zoom or Google Meet. This can be used for in-person learning or synchronous learning. Please note: there is a script provided for use on each slide.
Here you will find an example of a Prolific Writing Assignment that went through the seven step writing process. You can see the student is beginning to implement revisions and edits between drafts.
Group Role Cards
I developed this to help structure the group work during revision groups
Reading Annotations
I developed this to help students interact with the texts they read during Prolific Writing. This is referenced in the lesson cycle.
Seven Step Writing Process
I developed this to introduce all seven steps of the writing process to students. This is referenced in the lesson cycle.
