Prayer of Confession and assurance of forgiveness

We are the people of God. The Scripture reminds us that we still sin.

We need to confess our failures, knowing that Jesus intercedes for us with the Father, who freely forgives us. So let us draw near to God with confidence and pray in confession together.

Holy and merciful God,

In your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you.

You alone know how often we have sinned;

in wandering from your ways,

in wasting your gifts,

in forgetting your love.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all that we've done that displeases you.

Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light, and to walk in your ways,

for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Assurance of forgiveness...

Today especially we recall the hope of the resurrection for our assurance. As St. Paul writes, Christ "was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

The vindication of Jesus through his resurrection, gives you assurance that your sin has been truly paid for. You stand righteous before a holy God. Thanks be to God!

Bible Readings - Mark 12:18-27

Mark 12:18-27 New International Version (NIV)

18 Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection[a]whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[b]? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”

Sermon

Knowing the Resurrection is real

Responding to God's Word together

Say together the Apostle's Creed: a statement of the faith which connects us with Christians from the earliest times and all over the world today. It affirms our hope in the resurrection.

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic* church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Close with Scripture

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20, 21)

"Go in peace to love and serve the Lord and your neighbour."
