Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
After 12 years of counseling, I decided to take the opportunity of applying for a one-year sabbatical in order to pursue my desire to improve as an online instructor and counselor. It was the best decision I could have made! I considered myself tech savvy, but after taking the @One courses I realized that there were so many tools and teaching practices that I did not know about.
I have never taught fully online, and now I feel prepared and confident to teach online. I also feel inspired to continue learning and evolving as an online instructor. I look forward to sharing my newly acquired knowledge to my colleagues and to hopefully inspire to take advantage of all the wonderful @One courses that promote distance education professional development.
I realize that technology is ever evolving so it is my hope to continue evolving as an online instructor as well. I will continue to take @One course and attend conferences whenever possible so that I can stay up to date on tools and skills that will help me be a better instructor. I will also continue to network with colleagues on and off campus because I have learned this past year that my colleagues are wonderful resources and have a myriad of information to share. I will also join the Distance Education committee on my campus so that I can be part of the team who is at the forefront of distance education on our campus.
Certifications
I have completed the courses listed below, and they have been instrumental in my preparation to teach online. Not only have I learned a tremendous amount of information, but I also completed the courses feeling inspired to continue learning and evolving as an online instructor.
While on sabbatical, I also completed the coursework and requirements to earn a Career Advising Certificate through the UC San Diego Extension Program. Completion of the certificate makes me eligible to receive the Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) certification through the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP). The CWDP is a nationally recognized credential for individuals who have demonstrated they have what it takes to provide the highest quality services to our nation's job seekers and businesses.
Courses
Conferences
I plan to continue attending the Online Teaching Conference in Southern California. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other educators and to learn about new tools and strategies that support student success and online teaching.
Caninnovate is an online conference designed for California Community College Canvas users. While I have never had the opportunity to attend the conference I plan to do so in the future. I also plan to review the videos that have been archived.
Looking Forward
When I return from sabbatical I plan to join the Distance Education Committee. The purpose of the Distance Education Committee (DEC) is to oversee and guide the college by providing training and implementation of all the online and hybrid courses across the curriculum and programs. The committee shapes the college's approach to create robust and quality online learning by implementing Common Course Management System (CCMS). The committee strives to support a campus culture to create innovative and cost-effective solutions to overcome the challenges in Distance Education (DE).
I plan on taking additional @One courses in the future. I want to ensure that I continue to learn about innovative tools and practices that can make me a better instructor.
