I couldn’t have a chosen a better course to start my @One Advanced Online Teaching Certification with. Humanizing Online Teaching was more than I expected. I learned about online tools that I had never heard of, and I felt inspired by all my classmates who are doing amazing work to humanize their classes. I have never taught fully online; however, I have taught a hybrid course once, and after taking Humanizing Online Teaching, I realized that there is SO much more I can do to create an online classroom where students feel welcome, inspired, and motivated.
I invite you to review the presentation that I have embedded below in the examples that I created in Adobe Spark to read about where I am now and what I took away from the Humanizing Online Teaching course.
A message that resonated from the material that was presented during class was that “Online classes create pathways to higher education for first-generation, low-income students”. I was one of those students who struggled to navigate higher education, and if it wasn’t for instructors and advisors who cared, I am not sure that I could have completed my academic journey. I now have an opportunity to be an online instructor who really supports first-generation students by creating a dynamic and inclusive online classroom. I want students to know that I am present, care about their success in my class, and that I am aware of their academic needs and will do my absolute best to support them.
Digital Storytelling & Adobe Spark
Utilizing Adobe Spark, which is a storytelling suite, I was able to share with my instructors and classmates my experience and newly acquired knowledge that I gathered from the Humanizing Online Teaching course. Adobe Spark provided me a creative space to tell my story.
Course Overview Project
This project provides a short overview of the (Counseling 013- Career Planning) course that I teach. The goal of the video is to humanize and bring human presence to my online course.
Online Student Voices Project
The Online Student Voices Project demonstrates my ability to digitally story tell by utilizing an online tool called Adobe Spark. Not only did I learn how to use Adobe Spark but utilizing Bloom's Taxonomy Framework I learned how the student I interviewed understood and acquired knowledge. I appreciated this assignment because I know that I can integrate something similar in my courses which will allow students to digitally story tell their stories.
Introductions via Flipgrid
Another way I plan to humanize my course will be to assign student introductions during the first week of class via Flipgrid. Utilizing Flipgrid allows students to familiarize themselves with their classmates and instructor.
Community college students are more likely to come from underserved populations and are inclined to feelings of self-doubt in academic settings. When learning online, our students need to know they have an instructor who cares and is there to support them, and that they are part of a vibrant learning community. Effective online teachers mindfully cultivate their presence at the course level and one-on-one with students. These interactions foster a relationship based on trust, which is the foundation of a learning community.
