PEMS: Physical, Emotional, Mental, Social, Spiritual.
A Health Plan.
A PEMS Health Plan is a personal and public health plan that becomes a daily discipline of physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual attitudes and actions for a healing, holiness, and wholeness of individuals and institutions of society.
By practicing our inclusive health plans everyday, we will seek heavenly, helpful health habits of a higher power, and we will avoid hellish, harmful habits of a lower power. Our health plans will guide our search inward and outward, so that we will find more healing, holiness, and wholeness, as private and public people.
Trying to keep a discipline each day is difficult, but a life devoted to positive purpose will reward us with a sense of happiness, and will be our celebration for living.
PHYSICAL HEALTH
Seek:
Eating. An inward expression of our physical health might be what we choose to eat and drink. A healthy diet will include sufficient water and a variety of food, taken at regular meals, in adequate, but not excessive, calories to maintain a desirable weight.
Exercising. An outward expression of our physical health might be how we choose to condition our bodies. A healthy exercise program will include stretching for warm up, strengthening for power and control, and aerobic activities for stamina, continuing for several minutes and occurring on several days a week, adjusted to our levels of tolerance.
Avoid:
Injuries. We will use protective equipment such as goggles, ear plugs, helmets, and seat belts, and we will follow safety instructions before we drive or operate machines, in order to prevent accidents. We will install smoke detectors in our homes, and we will avoid speeding or distraction when driving, arguments that lead to fights, and using firearms or weapons carelessly or when we are angry. We will be aware of our surroundings and alert to possible danger that may cause injury.
Illnesses. We will keep our bodies, clothes, homes, and work places clean and free of toxins in order to prevent diseases. We will avoid having unprotected sex and multiple sex partners, and using addictive drugs, including tobacco and alcohol. We will know the benefits and risks of all medications used. We will receive recommended immunizations to prevent infections, and we will have periodic examinations if recommended, or when symptoms of possible disease appear.
EMOTIONAL HEALTH
Seek:
Laughing. An inward expression of our emotional health might be our sense of humor. Letting ourselves laugh at our thoughts and our situations may help relieve stress and tension, and may enable us to change our attitudes and actions, so that we will have healthier perspectives about any problems we face. There is hope of recovery when we stop to consider what we are doing, and what we need to do for corrective action.
Loving. An outward expression of our emotional health might be how we love ourself and others. Our love will be gentle and kind, respectful and giving, expressed in cooperation and conservation. We will speak to and hold our loved ones everyday. We will be patient and accept the imperfections in ourselves and others. When we love with intimacy, we will listen carefully, speak considerately, and touch compassionately.
Avoid:
Anger. We will resolve our anger as early as possible, with the help of others, in order to prevent guilt or depression. We will deal openly and directly with emotional injury, resentments, or jealously, knowing that honesty will bring resolution and healing.
Abuse. We will never hurt, degrade, or be disrespectful toward others or ourselves. We will never be possessive or controlling. We will avoid social relationships, activities, and entertainments that are violent, pornographic, or demeaning, which will cause harm or hurt to others or ourselves.
MENTAL HEALTH
Seek:
Reading. An inward expression of our mental health might be the learning we receive when we read everyday. By using resources from the library, we will discover literature, history, philosophy, religion, fine arts, sciences, mathematics, and other subjects, from many cultures. Our reading will stimulate questions and ideas, which we may put to good use somewhere and sometime, and we will be more confident and creative when we are informed.
Writing. An outward expression of our mental health will be our written reflections about our lives, our feelings, our reactions to a situation, our hopes and ideas. When we regularly practice writing we will learn to organize and understand our feelings and thoughts. Writing will open our minds for more reasoned, realistic responses to life situations, and will result in better communication with others.
Avoid:
Watching. Instead of passive entertainment, when we spend time watching others do something, we will seek active recreation. If we watch, or listen to, violent, gossiping, deceptive, or thoughtless films or persons, we may believe that what we hear and see is reality, which will give us a distorted view of the world, and will dull our minds to think for ourselves.
Waiting. We will also avoid idle time, waiting for something to happen. If we are bored we may seek reckless, destructive activities. We will use our free time to learn or to help others.
SOCIAL HEALTH
Seek:
Rights. An inward expression of our social health might be the choices we make about the rights we receive from society. We will want all persons in the world to have rights of self-expression and self-determination, and equal opportunity for food, clothing, housing, health care, education, employment, land use, and conservation of natural resources, regardless of their sex, age, race, creed, or culture. We will want world governments and the administration of all social institutions to be equally represented and controlled by all individuals who are part of them.
Responsibilities. An outward expression of our social health might be the choices we make about the responsibilities we return to society. We will accept responsibility as an opportunity to earn and to preserve our rights, and to respect and to serve ourselves and our communities. When we act responsibly we will have a sense of self worth and identity, and we will be known for our dependability, kindness, tolerance, fairness, strength, and courage.
Avoid:
Injustice. We will avoid greed and possessiveness, which will cause us to take more than our share, or to use natural resources unequally, which will limit the opportunities others deserve. We will share fairly until the standard of living of all people on earth is the same as our own.
Intolerance. We will avoid prejudice and closed mindedness, which will lead to exclusion and division between people and to eventual war, destroying all social relationships. We will never trust or follow individuals or institutions who claim that truth can only be known through them, or from some message revealed to them or to other persons, or who demand an obedience to any belief. We will be open minded and see issues from other points of view. We may never know the truth of existence, which may always be a mystery to Life everywhere in the Universe.
SPIRITUAL HEALTH
Seek:
Praying. An inward expression of our spiritual health might be our meditation experience, when we find a time and a place each day to be alone and in silence, in order to relax our bodies, to release our tension and distress, to empty our thoughts of work to be done, and to open ourselves to AOS, All One SOUL, Spirit Of Universal Light Life Love, in order to connect ourselves to the Ultimate Meaning of our lives. No matter where we are or what circumstances are influencing us, we are able to gather strength and peace, and to know that in our apparent aloneness, we are not alone. By communicating with the Essential Meaning of our being, we are able to return to the world with a positive purpose, and a desire to love ourselves and others. Before we leave our place of silence, we will say a prayer of thanksgiving and need, for our experience of being connected to One Holy and Healing Wholeness of All nature, and for our expressions of strength and courage, honesty and humility, tolerance and justice, in order to care for ourselves and all other persons, the earth and all life, the universe, and All One SOUL.
Practicing. An outward expression of our spiritual health might be how we put into action our spiritual attitudes about love and caring, truth and sharing, strength and courage, tolerance and justice, cooperation and conservation, in order to achieve a better self and society. We will celebrate our connections with all persons and with other living creatures on earth, and with the universe. We will rejoice in having a daily discipline, which helps us discover ways of healing and health, so that we will become more whole and holy, little by little, day by day.
Avoid:
Selfishness. We will never deceive, or steal from, other persons. We will live honestly and unselfishly, knowing how little we need for our spiritual happiness.
Superiority. We will not be arrogant or self-righteous. We will be humbled by the mystery of our lives and of the universe, and by the fact that we do not know how what where when or why we are living or will be dying.
