One of the best things about graphic novels is their appeal to a reluctant reader. While graphic novels are the perfect transition between picture books and more advanced chapter books, that doesn't mean that these creative and colorful stories are only for unwilling readers. Anybody can enjoy or be entertained by a graphic novel and below are some of my favorite and most beautifully drawn graphic novels that will absolutely delight any type of reader.
Sheets - Recommended Age: 10 +
Wendell is a ghost wearing a sheet and Marjorie is a young girl running her family's laundromat. The story shifts between their two perspectives until they inevitably intertwine in this heartfelt story about loss, friendship, and acceptance.
Smile - Recommended Age: 10 +
Raina trips, falls, and lands on her teeth, we follow her on a long and frustrating journey about her experience with on and off again braces, the pressure of middle school, and friendships. This graphic novel is an autobiography.
Amulet - Recommended Age: 9 +
When Emily moves into a strange new house after the death of her father, she discovers a magical amulet and a dangerous new world full of sinister creatures. When one of the monsters kidnaps her mother, Emily and her brother Nevin must navigate this new world to save their mom.
5 Worlds - Recommended Age: 8+
In this epic action adventure story, three unlikely heroes are going to have to work together to save the five worlds. Follow Oona Lee, a clumsy sand-dancer, An Tzu, a savvy hoodlum, and Jax Amboy, a beloved star athlete, as they embark on a dangerous quest to unite the five worlds.
Astronaut Academy - Recommended Age: 8+
In this zany graphic novel, each short chapter is focused on a different student's perspective at Astronaut Academy. When new student, Hakata Soy, enrolls in the academy he will have to learn how to survive anti-gravity gymnastics, fireball, and an evil robot that has it out for him.
Astronaut Academy -Recommended Age: 12+
A heartfelt and meaningful story about teamwork and friendship. In this vibrant colorful graphic novel, former friends Luna and Ren must relearn how to play with each other and new teammates while dealing with their own personal problems on and off the court.
The Princess in Black - Recommended Age: 4+
Princess Magnolia is a prim and proper princess with a big secret, she is also the mysterious Princess in Black! During the day, she is a tea drinking, curtsying, royal, but when the monster alarm goes off, she transforms into a butt kicking ninja who can fight any monster who gets in her way.
Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea! - Recommended Age: 5+
Narwhal the a positive and carefree unicorn of the sea and Jelly is their logical and reasonable opposite. These friends are joined by their love of waffles and adventure in this adorable graphic novel.
The Last Kids on Earth -Recommended Age: 8+
When 13 year old Jack Sullivan finds himself in the middle of a monster apocalypse, he knows he's no match for the beasts outside, even in his reinforced treehouse. So Jack builds a team with his fellow classmates and decide to slay the Blarg, the ultimate final boss of the entire apocalypse.
