When you think of the word "comics", do Marvel, DC, or some other popular superhero franchise come to mind? These comics are famous for their creativity and artistic expression. They provide a whole new form of storytelling and can be the perfect type of literature for a reluctant reader. Comics can demonstrate humor, satire, and symbolism in a way that ordinary text can not do. Below are some of my favorite comic books that are both entertaining and compelling!
Although often considered juvenile, comic books are not just for kids. Comic books create and bring a whole new world-building element to reading. It immerses the reader into a different universe and unlike most novels, they combine art and dialogue to tell a story. Author Scott McCloud's book Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art describes the importance of both comics and graphic novels, the difference between the two, and what makes the special. I highly recommend if you're interested in learning more about the meaning behind comics, if not keeping scrolling for other comic ideas!

Calvin and Hobbes
Follow Calvin and his imaginary friend/stuffed animal tiger Hobbes as they go on adventures, get into trouble, and the importance of imagination.

Milk & Mocha
The story about two charming bears with opposite personalities who remind us of the sweet moments with family.
Recommended Age: 4+
Gravity Falls: Lost Legends
Based on the popular TV show, these four new comics follow twins Mabel and Dipper as they return to the mysterious Gravity Falls with their Grunkle Stan and friends.
Recommended Age: 9+
Phoebe and Her Unicorn
When Phoebe skips a rock across the pond and hits a unicorn in the face. Follow the unlikely friendhsip between a messy middleschooler and a self obssessed unicorn.
