A recently approved biological techinque for covering up full thickness cartilage losses. The state of the art technique takes patient cartilage biopsy which is sent to a laboratory where the biopsy is enzymatically treated in order to isolate the chondrocytes. Once these chondrocytes are obtained, they are then expanded in number and sent back to the surgeon approximately 6 to 8 weeks later for implantation. The same is transplanted to the defect area in the patient knee.
The patients should be ready for an intensive post-procedural physiotherapy and should have a focal cartilage defect only. The choice of patient for the procedure is of utmost importance. The patients fare with good results and there are high chances of being able to perform most activities of daily living without pain.
Activity/lifestyle modification is important post-surgery. For more information, please feel free to consult our orthopedic team at Arthrocenter.
