The engineering field has many options for careers, and I have not yet decided what field I would want to pursue, but I am most interested in Electrical and Computer engineering. From a young age, I always liked creating things, these creations sparked my drive for engineering. Recently, I have taken more interests in electronic and computers, so that is more in focus for my later career. I always looked up to my older brother, an engineer. He would come home with his work for his engineering class, and I was mesmerized by what he was doing, that's when I knew I wanted to pursue engineering as well.
To ensure success in my career path, I have taken the highest level mathematics and sciences offered to me. My completion of geometry freshman year prepared me to design complex shapes and models. My sophomore year I took a double-period Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus, along with AP physics. The English and writing classes I am taking will benefit me in communicating my ideas and composing reports. I am currently enrolled in the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center's Engineering program, in which I expect to learn countless things to assist in my career. The program will teach me how to use tools, and even get certified. The certifications and life skills I will obtain in the Engineering program will greatly enhance my career, along with my mathematical knowledge.
Both engineering and lacrosse have pieces that need to work together to succeed. In lacrosse, when there is 6 people on one side of the field, communication is key to being a great team, and miscommunication could lead to failure. Many times throughout my time playing lacrosse, I have had to step up as a leader, whether it be showing how a drill is done, assisting people who are struggling, or keeping others on task. Having a goal and sticking to it is essential to success in many things, not just engineering or lacrosse. Planning out what you will do and following it, even if not done perfectly, is a crucial factor in success. Playing lacrosse will help me in my career within engineering, through skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and sticking with goals.
After my completion of the Engineering program, I hope to work in an apprenticeship. In this apprenticeship, I would hope to learn how to operate in the workforce, and begin my career as successful as possible. If not an apprenticeship, I plan to enroll in a university majoring in engineering, to acquire as much prior knowledge and preparations as I can before I hopefully find an internship, and eventually a full time job. My enrollment in a university will ensure that I am as prepared as possible for my productive career ahead.
After achieving my career goal, I plan to work in my community to fix some sort of problem. If I obtained an engineering position in Southern Maryland, I could focus my work on assisting military or governmental objectives in defense of our country. I could volunteer at various activities in schools to spread engineering knowledge such as career days, science fairs, and robotics programs. In my future job, I could also take in an intern so that they would have the same opportunities I hope to get in my career. Through these efforts in the community, I hope to have a positive impact on the next generation.
