Scholastic Writing Awards

Submissions due by February 1, 2024 

Students in grades 7-8 can submit original works for judging in the Pittsburgh regional competition of the Scholastic Writing Awards. There is an online registration and a $10 fee associated with each entry, but submissions must be approved by Dr. Survinski before students can complete the online portion. Click the icon on the left for a detailed description of each category and rubrics. Students can submit more than one piece, but only one per category. Cagetories include: critical essay, dramatic script, flash fiction, journalism, humor, novel writing, personal essay/memoir, poetry, science fiction & fantasy, or short story.

Waldman International Art & Writing Competition

Submissions are due by February 1, 2024

This event is sponsored by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, and challenges stuents to create an original piece of art of writing that addresses this year's theme: Rescue during the Holocaust. Entries must be submitted to Dr. Survinski by February 1 to be considered as an HMS entry into the regional competition.  View the slideshow on the left for more detailed information about the process.

Children's Choice Awards

6th Grade Only- January-April

6th grade students interested in participating in this literature event should sign up by January 16. Students will read 6 books before April, and then participate in a virtual/in person event that involves team activities, trivia, and author talks with students from around the Pittsburgh area.

Spontaneous Problem Solving Club

January 9 and 23  (2:45-3:45pm)

If you are good at creatively solving problems, this club might be for you! We'll meet in the Robotics Studio, and students must have a ride home at 3:45. We will work on activities to support Odyssey of the Mind and other problem solving challenges.
