1A: The Data Whisperers: Elevating IR in Uncertain Times
Presented By: Dr. Carolyn Mata, CM Education Insights and Solutions
Session Description:
In a time when higher education is navigating political crosswinds, funding pressures, and shifting public trust, the work of institutional research has never been more critical—or more misunderstood. This session will explore the emerging trends reshaping the IR landscape, from the erosion of trust in data to the growing need for clear, concise, and compelling storytelling.
We’ll tackle big questions:
Why does IR so often feel invisible—until someone wants numbers, fast?
How do we stay agile in environments where advocacy feels risky and data infrastructure feels fragile?
What does it mean to do “good enough” analysis in a world of imperfect data and tight timelines?
Through real-world examples and candid reflections from her work with colleges nationwide, Carrie will challenge IR professionals to step beyond compliance and into impact—to ask better questions, ground their work in purpose, and reclaim the narrative. Whether you're answering a legislator’s call or informing your campus’s next big move, this session is a call to action for IR to lead with clarity, courage, and strategy.
2:00-3:00 PM

2B: Doing more with less in IR
Presented By: Dr. Katherine Knuckles, Saint Louis University
Session Description:
Join us as we detail how we were able to maintain all of our responsibilities, while also taking on new projects and reporting requirements (FVT/GE anyone?) after experiencing turnover in 60 percent of staff and a new office structure. We will describe our office expectation setting, collaborative culture-building, and reliance on tools, such as Alteryx, to revise and semi-automate nearly every procedure in our office.
3:00-4:00 PM
3A: AI: Developing the foundations of institutional policies (Panel Discussion)
Presented By: Dr. Rob Voss and Mr. Philip Arnold
Dr. Rob Voss is Principal at Voss AI Consulting, where he helps business, education, and financial organizations understand and leverage AI to save time, protect client data, and increase profitability.
