True workplace inclusion isn't just about avoiding mistakes, it is about actively building bridges for inclusion. Sometimes, when navigating diverse languages and pronunciation, team members find creative, warm ways to invite each other their own cultural worlds.
In this module, we look at real-world case study of "Cultural Name- Gifting", where two colleagues turn a moment of linguistic unfamiliarity into a playful, deep respectful exchange of cultural identities.
Imagine a remote project team pairing two colleagues from entirely different backgrounds: Katlego and Frederick (who goes by the nickname: "Rick").
Initially, Rick struggles a bit with the pronunciation of Katlego. Instead of letting it become an awkward barrier or a source of tension, they have a warm conversation. Katlego explains that his name means "Success" or "Achievement". Rick loves the meaning and the sound of the name. Together, they make a lighthearted, mutual agreement:
Rick commits to mastering the pronunciation of Katlego.
In return, Katlego "gifts" Rick a name from his own culture that matches Rick's personality, calling him "Tshepo" (meaning hope or faith in Katlego's language).
Fritz: "Katlego, I want to make sure I am pronouncing your name with the absolute respect it deserves. I know I stumbled earlier. Can you teach me the right cadence?"
Katlego (smiling): "Of course! It’s Kat-le-go. It means 'Success' in Setswana."
Rick: "Kat-le-go. That’s a beautiful cultural name."
Katlego (smiling): "Based on your energy and how much you help the team, I’m officially gifting you a name from my culture. Tshepo which means "to trust."
Rick: "Wow, I love that. I accept it gladly! If I get to be Tshepo on this team, then I'm giving you the traditional name 'Felix'. Deal?"
Katlego: "Deal! Now we have a name in both of our worlds.”
It Normalises Humility: It shows the rest of the organisation that curiosity and warmth can solve workplace communication challenges
It Builds Shared Identity: By inviting a coworker into your language and gifting them a name, you are saying " You belong in my world, and I belong in yours."
It Erases the Power Dynamic: Neither person feels small, defensive or excluded. It changes the vibe from "compliance leture" to an active partnership.
