Principals/assistant principals will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The principal/ assistant principal must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decision so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of everyday life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.
5a. School Resources and Budget: The principal/assistant principal establishes budget processes and systems which are focused on, and result in, improved student achievement.
The budget at Corinth Holders High is controlled by the Principal and School Secretary. I was able to work a little with the 061 fund which is "Staff Morale". It was out of this fund that we bought pullovers for all teachers at Christmas, had several luncheons and are providing graduation shirts for all teachers in June.
During our Finance class, we were able to take a Title I budget for Nashville Elementary School and plan for the next year. Within our group, we determined where the money came from (local, state, or federal), then examined the School Improvement Goals for next year. Some adjustments made were to fund licenses for educational programs already in use and hire part time tutors to aid in the intervention programs.
5b. Conflict Management and Resolution: The principal/assistant principal effectively and efficiently manages the complexity of human interactions so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
I was responsible for 11th grade discipline within my role at Corinth Holders High. This led to daily opportunities to resolve conflict and apply consequences per the JCPS Policy 4304 guidelines. Most of the conflict resolution came when notifying parents of student's actions. This resulted in many parent conferences either in person or by phone to explain how the consequences were clearly outlined in the policy. There are always exceptions however and I learned to listen, gather all information and look at a student's history before setting the consequence.
Discipline was entered into a new application this year called "Educator's Handbook." This program generated necessary documents and allowed other Administrators to view all disciplinary action. Teachers were able to enter write-ups as well and see the result of any action taken.
I also handled bus discipline. This involved pulling bus videos, watching for the action in question, identifying students and conferencing with them. Once again, consequences were given per policy for a range of infractions.
5c. Systematic Communication: The principal/assistant principal designs and utilizes various forms of formal and informal communication so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Corinth Holders uses a variety of communication outlets to keep parents and students informed. A weekly ConnectEd call goes out from the Principal which covers all activities and testing going on at the school for the upcoming week. We have to inform the Principal by Friday morning if we have contributions to the ConnectEd.
We also have Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter where we communicate celebrations, sports events, upcoming activities and school schedule changes. Whenever we have a picture to post, it gets sent to the owner of each platform for approval and posting.
One communication I had complete control over was the Bus Remind application. This was used for communicating to parents when a bus was going to be late, or if there was a bus replacement. This was especially useful this year because of the bus driver shortage. Several messages went out morning and evening to inform parents of transportation issues using the Remind system.
5d. School Expectations for Students and Staff: The principal/assistant principal develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students and staff.
During our time together in the summer, the Faculty Handbook and Student Handbook was updated and posted to the Corinth Holders website. This was especially helpful for me as a new Administrator to be able to comb through all the nuances of the school. This is also where we developed the Professional Development schedule, SIT schedules and PLC dates, posting them in the handbooks for reference. The staff handbooks were printed and distributed to all staff during our first Faculty Meeting. We had paper copies of the Student Handbook available during orientation, but also provided a QR code for access electronically.
