Principals/assistant principals will understand and act on the understanding of the important role a school’s culture plays in contributing to the exemplary performance of the school. Principals/assistant principals must support and value the traditions, artifacts, symbols and positive values and norms of the school and community that result in a sense of identity and pride upon which to build a positive future. A principal/assistant principal must be able to “re-culture” the school if needed to align with school’s goals of improving student and adult learning and to infuse the work of the adults and students with passion, meaning and purpose. Cultural leadership implies understanding the school and the people in it each day, how they came to their current state, and how to connect with their traditions in order to move them forward to support the school’s efforts to achieve individual and collective goals.
3a. Focus on Collaborative Work Environment: The principal/assistant principal understands and acts on the understanding of the positive role that a collaborative work environment can play in the school’s culture.
PLC's at Corinth Holders occur weekly. Teachers are required to fill in the agenda, including times per topic and designate rolls for the meeting. At the beginning of the meeting, we always start with taking attendance and designating someone to read the norms. Each member of the PLC is responsible for holding themselves and others to the norms. The Assistant Principal assigned to the subject area is required to attend each PLC and answer questions as necessary. My areas of responsibility for PLC's were Math and Fine Arts.
Another tool I created was the MTSS agenda for our DPST meetings. On this agenda, I linked each teacher's data sheet as well as links to the intervention programs and login information. Teachers referred to this sheet often as they shared students with other teachers and could look at their progress by simply clicking on the link. This is also the common sheet used to discuss and exit students from MTSS when they meet their benchmark scores.
3b. School Culture and Identity: The principal/assistant principal develops and uses shared vision, values and goals to define the identity and culture of the school.
This year the School Improvement Team recommended a refreshing of the CHHS Vision, Mission and Values. As a member of the team, we discussed how we might gather input from all Stakeholders of the school. As a result, we sent out this Google Form and received an 85% response rate. Afterwards a committee was formed to take all the feedback and work on the renewed statements, presenting them to the team by early May, 2022.
As a result of this process, we also had PIRATE posters printed for every classroom in the school, every crossroad and every common area reminding our students that we are #PiratesOn Board.
3c. Acknowledges Failures; Celebrates Accomplishments and Rewards: The principal/assistant principal acknowledges failures and celebrates accomplishments of the school in order to define the identity, culture and performance of the school.
At the end of every faculty meeting, the Principal shares "Pirate Wanted" boards. These are peer recognitions that any staff can complete and send in to be published. My part in this process is to assist in distributing the nomination forms monthly, and collecting them for compilation onto the wanted slides portion of the faculty meeting presentation. Afterwards, the forms are given to the recipients of the recognition. This is always the most anticipated part of the faculty meeting and teachers appreciate the opportunity to recognize each other.
Another part of this process is collecting votes for the Staff "Pirate of the Month". An email goes out ever month with a call for nominations. I assist in collecting nominations and creating a Google Form sent out for voting. The "Pirate of the Month" receives a picture with Mr. Johnson on Social Media and a $50 gift card.
3d. Efficacy and Empowerment: The principal/assistant principal develops a sense of efficacy and empowerment among staff which influences the school’s identity, culture and performance.
Every morning during the school year, an Administrator would give the announcements, ending with the #PiratesOnBoard pledge. This truly set the tone for the day as it reminds us that we are proud, relentless, accountable, together, empowered and strong.
Another project I participated in was to set up a Department schedule for SMART Lunch. Teachers were given the opportunity to choose Enhancements they would like to offer to students. These could be a hobby of theirs, music lessons, genre studies, era dives, etc. Teachers were excited to be able to share and this gave students the opportunity to try out various hobbies. The schedule also included tutorial time for students to meet with their teachers for help as well as their weekly PLC time.
