As an educator, my teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student has the potential to succeed, and that it is my responsibility to create a learning environment that fosters that success. I seek to create a place in which every student who walks through my door feels supported to challenge themselves. I am also very passionate about understanding who my students are, both in and out of the classroom. This helps me tailor instruction, management styles, and emotional support in order to meet the needs of the specific students in my class. As a teacher, I hope to instill a growth mindset in all my students, build strong relationships, and adjust my instruction to meet individual goals.
I try to remember that my students are children. School can be scary and failure is something that even us adults shy away from. I hold my students to a high standard because I know they are all resilient, curious, and capable. They can all do amazing things! However, it can be easy for young learners to forget how powerful they are. My goal is to create a classroom community where students feel safe to explore new ideas. I encourage my students to take risks, embrace challenges, and view setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. “Too hard” and “I cannot” are statements that are not allowed in our classroom. I hope that by promoting a growth mindset, my students will develop an eagerness for learning and a work ethic that will lead them to success far beyond school.
Building relationships is another huge part of how I create a classroom community built for learning. Students who feel seen, heard, and valued are more likely to be engaged in the learning process. I believe that these innate needs must be met before meaningful learning can occur. I take time to get to know each student as an individual. I want to learn about their family, community, interests, strengths, and areas for growth. By understanding who they are and what motivates them, I am able to tailor my instruction to their needs and help them achieve their full potential. I also challenge students to learn about their classmates in order to foster respect and teamwork in our classroom.
Lastly, I believe that a good teacher is flexible. Each new class as well as each student is a new challenge. Instruction needs to be based around the students, not the other way around. By understanding my students, I am able to foster student learning in the best way possible for them. I also believe anecdotal records and formative data are essential to ensure that students are receiving the support they need. I make it my goal to incorporate many different forms of learning into each day. Furthermore, small group work is how I develop goal setting with my students. Students are able to work on a skill together that matches their instructional needs.
In conclusion, I prioritize my students above all else. I am passionate about this profession because it is important. Not all students receive proper support at home so it is very important to me that every student I come into contact with feels comfortable and safe. I want to create a classroom community that supports all learners and enables them to grow. My goal is to be a positive influence in the lives of students, staff, and community members alike.
