As an educator, having a passion for learning is part of the job. As the MAED program comes to an end, I can’t help but think about all of the learning I still have to do. All of my future learning goals are centered around what could make me the best educator possible. I attempt to develop new and interesting ways to foster learning in my classroom everyday. It has been fun to explore various methods of learning myself over the course of this program. As a learner, I am excited to continue exploring different ways to receive information. Through this program, I was able to learn about 21st century learning. I am eager to learn about more new domains such as this that will help me move forward in my career as both an educator and a lifelong learner. My main goals are to: implement 21st century learning, engage with different mediums of teaching, and become well versed in student exceptionalities.
The first goal I would like to focus on is becoming more familiar with 21st century learning. I was lucky enough to explore this topic briefly in one of my courses. However, it is such a new field that there is so much more to learn. As I move forward in my career, I would like to make 21st century learning a big part of what I do. If I desire new and creative ways of learning for my students, why not want that for myself? In order to learn more about 21st century learning, I will need to get familiar with online sources. 21st century learning is all about technology in today’s world. In order to understand those things, one has to immerse themselves in the content. Therefore, I would like to begin using online learning sources more often. Sources such as Youtube, Reddit, and social media can be a vast source of information. Specifically, channels such as AITSL are designed for teachers by teachers to help stay up to date on the current best practices. Experimenting with these new ways of receiving knowledge will be a fun way to grow as a learner and as an educator.
The next goal I would like to work on is engaging with different mediums for teaching. Throughout my program, I explored how youth learn skills from many different places. Traditionally, children are taught out of a textbook. 21st century learning challenges this and proposes a new way of teaching. However, there are other forms of teaching that foster learning in their own ways. In the future, I hope to become knowledgeable about many of these different ways. In this program, I was able to learn about film and literature as a source of learning. I investigated different aspects of film and why they may be a beneficial tool for learning. Diving deeply into each method is how I will achieve my goal. I will have to use my research skills as well as trial and error to become knowledgeable about different teaching mediums such as physical education. I learned about positive youth development through sports. Could the same elements work in schools rather than fields? Questions like these are ones I am eager to begin testing and observing. As a starting place, I would like to read the book Break A Sweat, Change your Life by William E. Simon Jr.
Lastly, I hope to learn more about diverse students. No two students are remotely the same but they are all beautiful. I was a general education major so I have had little formal instruction focused on the diverse needs of students. We have discussed it here or there but I would like to dive into this topic more. In order to learn about student exceptionalities, I will have to collaborate with my peers. Collaboration is a great form of learning that I plan to use in the coming years. Observations and interviews with the special services people in my community will give me a better understanding of all students. I also hope to learn from teachers who have made podcasts or done Ted Talks around the subject. I recently found this interview of special education director Jenine Henry. I am hoping that watching this interview will give me some great starting information to educate myself and begin moving forward on this goal. I will also need to learn about each specific exceptionality as well as the accommodations needed for a child with that exceptionality. The knowledge I will gain from this investigation as well as 21st century learning and other teaching tools will help me feel like I am continuing to achieve my goal of being a lifelong learner.
